CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • New employees of the Department of Military Affairs will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • New employees of the Department of Military Affairs are required to participate in a direct deposit/electronic transfer program.
  • The Department of Military Affairs is paid on a monthly basis.
  • This position is a Cooperative Agreement position.
  • As a CANDIDATE, you are required to provide documentation (i.e. High School Diploma or Equivalency, College Transcripts, ETC.) to verify meeting these Minimum Qualifications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • One (1) year experience landscaping or maintaining grounds and property or related work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Performing physical activities that require moving one's whole body, such as in climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, where the activities often also require considerable use of the arms and legs, such as in the physical handling of materials.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensures proper maintenance of units lawns, shrubs and trees to include:

  • Maintaining all Unit lawns insuring that the length does not exceed 6 inches between cuttings.
  • Maintaining all Unit field areas ensuring that the length does not exceed 8 inches between cutting, to include fence lines.
  • Ensure all sidewalks and curb areas are edged once a month during the growing season.
  • Maintaining hedges and shrubs around the unit ensuring that they are trimmed at least once a month during the growing season. Includes care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch or trimming or edging around flowerbeds, walks, or walls.
  • Ability to use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge and brush trimmers or axes.
  • Operate equipment and tools to prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
  • Picks up and empty waste and recycling receptacles as required.
  • Maintain irrigation systems, including winterizing the systems and starting them up in spring.
  • Trim, pick flowers and clean flowerbeds.
  • Operate vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.

Ensures proper maintenance and servicing of mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws and edging equipment to include:

  • Performs minor maintenance, repairs on push and riding type mowers, and identifies equipment that require contract maintenance to the Building Manager.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs of weed eaters, chain saws, hedge trimmers, and walk behind edger, blowers and stick edger.
  • Responsible for ensuring an adequate supply of oil, fuel, weed eater string and minor repair parts are on hand to maintain lawn equipment.

Maintains Units restroom facilities in a clean orderly and sanitary condition to include but not limited to:

  • Cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes lavatories, urinals, and commodes daily.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs and disinfects floors and shower stalls.
  • Stocks deodorizers, toilet tissue, roll and C-Fold hand towels and soap dispensers daily.
  • Empties waste receptacles daily.
  • Cleans all stainless steel with stainless steel polish, cleans mirrors, ledges and benches daily.
  • Perform a Simi-annual G.I. cleaning of all restroom facilities in unit (this will be twice a year).
  • Identify any discrepancies noticed with plumbing, electrical, and plumbing fixtures in Restroom facilities to the building Manager for future repair.

Maintains hallways, corridors and other common areas to include but not limited to:

  • Sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing tiled areas and vacuuming, cleaning carpeted areas with the required equipment.
  • Clean all water fountains daily and clean stainless steel with stainless steel polish.
  • Clean all glass in hallway and on entry doors, polish all brass and stainless steel as required.
  • Operates cleaning equipment to include: vacuum cleaners, high and low speed buffers and carpet cleaning equipment.
  • Inventories cleaning supplies and equipment weekly and reorders supplies as required. Laborer will ensure that supplies are always available to complete the required task

Maintains records and performs all other assigned duties as assigned:

  • Must have excellent written and oral communications skills, time management skills to be accountable for maintaining maintenance work orders and equipment records as required.
  • Ability to read blue prints and schematic drawings while performing proper maintenance and care taking.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by the assigned Supervisor to include but not limited to; assisting janitorial staff, ground keepers and Maintenance mechanics in their assigned duties, cutting grass, clearing ditch lines and picking up trash and debris around base as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes.
  • Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • Skills in controlling operations of equipment or systems
